How to compress a PDF on Mac
- Choose a PDF from Finder. The file stays on your Mac and is read inside your browser.
- Select a quality level. Balanced is a useful starting point, Smaller file prioritizes reduction, and Higher quality preserves more detail.
- Compress and check the result in Preview. Compare the reported size and inspect every important page before sharing it.
When to use this instead of Preview
Mac Preview is useful for viewing, annotating, and exporting PDFs. This browser tool is better when you want three explained quality profiles and a clear before/after size report. A practical workflow is to process the copy here, then open the result in Preview for a final visual check.
Choose the right Mac PDF compression setting
- Smaller file is intended for strict upload limits, email attachments, and scans where size is the main concern.
- Balanced is the recommended starting point for forms, reports, receipts, and everyday sharing.
- Higher quality keeps more detail for fine text, diagrams, photographs, and pages that need closer inspection.
Compression results depend on the source. Image-heavy scans and documents assembled from iPhone photos often shrink substantially. A text-only PDF that is already efficiently encoded may stay similar in size or become larger after its pages are rebuilt as images. The result summary reports the actual change so you can decide whether to keep the new copy.
Compress a PDF on Mac without losing important detail
No lossy method can promise zero quality loss. Start with Balanced or Higher quality when the document contains small text, signatures, seals, QR codes, charts, or photographs. Use Smaller file only when the result must pass a strict size limit.
After downloading, inspect important pages in Preview. Confirm names, dates, numbers, signatures, orientation, and image clarity. Keep the original PDF instead of replacing it with the sharing copy.
Reduce the size of scanned PDFs from iPhone or a scanner
Scanned documents are often good candidates for compression because each page may contain a large image. For a better source, scan pages flat, use even lighting, crop unnecessary borders, and avoid capturing a detailed desk or background. Grayscale can reduce file size for ordinary text documents when color is not required by the recipient.
Long or high-resolution PDFs can require significant browser memory. If processing is slow, close memory-heavy tabs or process a shorter source. When a portal accepts several attachments, use Split PDF or Extract PDF pages.
What changes during compression
The tool uses PDF.js to render every page and pdf-lib to create a new PDF from compressed page images. This can reduce scans and photo-heavy files, but it also flattens selectable text, hyperlinks, form fields, annotations, layers, and other interactive features. Use the original when the recipient needs searchable text, clickable links, editable forms, accessibility features, or digital document behavior.
Password-locked PDFs must first be unlocked using a password you know. PDF2atom does not bypass or crack passwords. The downloaded copy has no PDF2atom watermark.
Privacy on your Mac
Your PDF stays in your browser. The document is rendered and rebuilt on your Mac. PDF2atom does not upload, store, inspect, or analyze it. This local workflow is useful for personal documents, but you should still follow your organization or recipient's rules when handling confidential information.

Frequently asked questions
Can I compress a PDF on Mac without installing an app?
Yes. Open this page in a modern Mac browser, choose a quality level, and compress the PDF locally without installing another application.
Can I compress a PDF on Mac without losing quality?
Lossy compression cannot guarantee zero quality loss. Start with Balanced or Higher quality and inspect small text, signatures, and images in Preview after downloading.
Are my PDF files uploaded?
No. PDF.js renders the document and pdf-lib rebuilds the compressed copy locally inside your browser. PDF2atom does not receive or store it.
Why did my PDF become larger?
The original may already be efficiently compressed or mostly contain text and vector content. This image-based method works best for scans and photo-heavy PDFs.
Will links, forms, and selectable text still work?
No. This compression method rebuilds pages as images, so selectable text, links, forms, annotations, and layers are flattened.
