How to convert a PDF to Word
- Select one PDF. The file is read locally in your browser and is not uploaded to PDF2atom.
- Create an editable DOCX. The tool extracts selectable text from every PDF page and writes it into a Word document with page breaks.
- Download and edit. Open the DOCX in Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, Google Docs, Pages, or another compatible editor and review the reading order.
What this basic PDF to Word converter preserves
This tool is designed for PDFs that already contain selectable text. It creates a real DOCX file with editable paragraphs and keeps the original PDF page boundaries by starting each extracted page on a new Word page. That makes it useful when you need to reuse text from a report, article, manual, letter, or office document without copying every page manually.
The conversion is intentionally honest about its limits. A PDF stores content for fixed-position display, while Word documents use flowing paragraphs and editable structure. This basic converter does not claim to recreate the original visual layout. It extracts text in the reading order reported by PDF.js and places it into a clean Word document.
Layouts, tables, columns, and images
Complex PDF layout may not convert in the order you expect. Multi-column pages, tables, headers, footers, text boxes, unusual font encoding, and positioned labels can appear as ordinary paragraphs or in a different sequence. Images, charts, form fields, annotations, and page decorations are not inserted into the DOCX by this basic version.
After downloading, compare the Word document with the original PDF. Review headings, paragraphs, lists, names, numbers, and page transitions. Rebuild tables or columns in Word when necessary.
Scanned PDFs require OCR
A scanned PDF can visibly show words while containing no selectable text. In that case, the pages are images and this tool will report that no text was found instead of producing an empty Word document. OCR is a separate process that recognizes characters from page images and can introduce recognition mistakes. Keeping OCR separate makes the result and limitations clearer.
Before converting, try selecting a sentence in your PDF viewer. If you cannot select individual words, the document probably needs OCR. When OCR support is added, scanned files will still require careful proofreading, especially for names, numbers, handwriting, tables, and low-quality scans.
Useful reasons to convert PDF text to DOCX
- Edit or rewrite a digitally created report, letter, article, or manual.
- Move PDF content into a collaborative Word or Google Docs workflow.
- Reuse paragraphs while keeping page references visible in the generated document.
- Create an editable draft before applying your own styles, headings, and tables.
Open the DOCX after conversion
The output uses the standard DOCX format. You can open it with Microsoft Word and many compatible document editors. Different editors can display spacing and default fonts differently, so review the document before distributing it.
Privacy and file safety
Your PDF and extracted text stay in your browser. PDF.js reads selectable text locally, and the DOCX library creates the Word file on your device. PDF2atom does not upload, store, inspect, or analyze the PDF, extracted text, or generated document. The output contains no PDF2atom watermark.
Password-locked PDFs must first be unlocked using a password you know. This tool does not bypass or crack passwords. Review sensitive information before opening the DOCX in a cloud-connected document editor, because that editor may have its own upload and privacy behavior.

Frequently asked questions
Will the Word document be editable?
Yes. Selectable PDF text is written into editable DOCX paragraphs. The original complex visual layout is not recreated.
Will tables, columns, and images be preserved?
Not reliably. This basic version focuses on selectable text and page boundaries. Tables, columns, images, forms, and positioned layout may need to be rebuilt.
Can it convert a scanned PDF to Word?
Not without OCR. If the PDF contains only page images, the tool reports that no selectable text was found instead of creating an empty document.
Are my PDF and extracted text uploaded?
No. PDF.js extracts the text locally and the DOCX file is generated in your browser. PDF2atom does not receive or store the files or text.
Why is the reading order different from the PDF?
PDF text can be stored as positioned fragments rather than flowing paragraphs. Columns, tables, and unusual encoding can affect the order reported by PDF.js.
What applications can open the DOCX?
Microsoft Word and many compatible editors such as LibreOffice, Google Docs, and Pages can open DOCX files, although display details can vary.
Does the generated Word file include a watermark?
No. PDF2atom adds no watermark or branding to the generated DOCX.
