Add page numbers to a PDF

Use this tool to insert page numbers into any PDF. Choose the position (bottom center, top right, etc.), set the starting number, and optionally add a prefix like "Page" or "P." before each number. The numbered PDF is created directly in your browser — no uploads, no signup.

    How to number PDF pages

    1. Select your PDF. The document stays on your device.
    2. Choose your settings. Pick a position, starting number, and optional prefix.
    3. Click Add Page Numbers. The tool creates a new PDF with page numbers at your chosen position on every page.

    Common uses

    • Add page numbers to a report, thesis, or dissertation before submission.
    • Number pages in a legal document, contract, or court filing.
    • Insert page numbers into a merged PDF that was created from multiple sources.
    • Add running page numbers to a presentation handout or training manual.

    Position and layout options

Six positions are available: bottom center, bottom right, bottom left, top center, top right, and top left. The page number is drawn in a clean Helvetica font in dark gray, sized to be readable without distracting from the page content. Each number is placed with a comfortable margin from the page edge.

The starting number defaults to 1 but can be any positive number. This is useful when numbering a section of a larger document, or when the cover page and table of contents are numbered separately.

    Adding a prefix

An optional prefix appears before each page number — for example, "Page 1", "P. 1", or "— 1 —". Leave the prefix empty for plain numbers. The tool inserts a space between the prefix and the number automatically.

    Privacy and file safety

Your PDF stays in your browser. pdf-lib reads the original file and creates the numbered version entirely on your device. PDF2atom does not upload, store, inspect, or analyze your document, and it adds no watermark.

    Frequently asked questions

Will page numbers overwrite my existing content?

Page numbers are drawn in the margin area. If a page has content very close to the edge in your chosen position, the number may overlap. Check the output, especially for pages with edge-to-edge content.

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set the starting number to any positive value. This is useful for multi-part documents where each part starts at a specific number.

Are my documents uploaded during processing?

No. The original PDF is read locally and the numbered version is created in your browser. PDF2atom never receives or stores your file.

What font is used for the page numbers?

Helvetica, a clean sans-serif font embedded in every PDF reader. The numbers are drawn in dark gray at a standard readable size.

Can I add both a header and a footer?

This version adds one page number per page. To add both a header and footer, process the PDF twice — once for each position.

Does this tool work with password-protected PDFs?

If you know the password, unlock the PDF first using the Unlock PDF tool, then add page numbers to the unlocked copy.

Will the output still be searchable?

Yes. Existing selectable text, links, and other PDF elements remain intact. Only the page number text is added to each page.

Does the output include a watermark?

No. PDF2atom adds no watermark or branding to the downloaded PDF.
