What kinds of PDFs work best
PDFs created from spreadsheets, database exports, or word processors typically contain selectable text that converts well. Bank statements, invoices, financial reports, and data exports are common use cases. The tool looks for comma-separated values, tab-separated columns, or consistent whitespace alignment to identify table rows.
If the PDF was created by scanning a paper document, the text may not be selectable. In that case, the tool will report that no text was found. OCR-based extraction (for scanned documents) is planned for a future update.

The download is a standard .xlsx workbook — just double-click to open it in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, or LibreOffice. The detected rows and columns land on a single sheet so you can sort, filter, and edit right away. Need plain comma-separated values instead? Use the dedicated PDF to CSV tool.
Privacy and file safety
Your PDF stays in your browser. PDF.js extracts the text locally and the .xlsx workbook is generated on your device. PDF2atom does not upload, store, inspect, or analyze your document, and it adds no watermark.

Can this tool extract tables from scanned PDFs?
This basic version works with PDFs that have embedded selectable text. Scanned or image-only PDFs without a text layer cannot be processed yet. OCR support is planned for a future update.
What output format does it produce?
A real .xlsx Excel workbook. It opens directly in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers, and LibreOffice. If you need plain comma-separated values, use the PDF to CSV tool instead.
Are my documents uploaded during extraction?
No. Text extraction and the .xlsx workbook are generated entirely in your browser. PDF2atom never receives or stores your PDF.
How does the tool detect tables?
It looks for consistent patterns like commas, tabs, or column-aligned whitespace in the extracted text. If your PDF has clearly structured tabular data, detection is usually accurate.
What if the extracted data looks wrong?
Check the preview before downloading. If columns are misaligned, the PDF may use complex layouts that the basic detector cannot parse. You can still download the .xlsx and fix the columns directly in Excel.
Does it handle complex merged cells or multi-level headers?
The basic detector flattens the text into rows and columns. Complex merged cells, nested headers, or spanned rows may not be accurately represented. The .xlsx gives you the raw data to restructure in Excel.
Will my financial data be safe?
Yes. Processing is entirely local. No data leaves your browser. The tool is suitable for bank statements, invoices, and other sensitive financial documents.
What is the difference between PDF to Excel and PDF to Text?
PDF to Text gives you raw, unformatted text from the PDF. PDF to Excel tries to detect table structures and outputs an .xlsx workbook. Use PDF to Excel when you need columns and rows for analysis.
