How to split a PDF in your browser
- Upload one PDF using the drop area above. The file is read locally in your browser so we can detect the page count.
- Choose a split mode. Extract page ranges into one PDF, or split every page into separate PDFs inside a ZIP file.
- Download the result. The new PDF or ZIP is generated on your device. Your original file is never uploaded.
Page range examples
1-3extracts pages 1, 2, and 3.1, 4, 7extracts only those individual pages.2-5, 9combines one range and one individual page.8-extracts from page 8 through the final page.-4extracts from page 1 through page 4.
Common use cases
- Remove extra pages before upload — keep only the pages required by an application form or portal.
- Extract invoice pages from a large monthly statement without sharing the whole document.
- Create a smaller attachment by pulling just the pages someone needs to review.
- Prepare legal exhibits by separating a long PDF into exhibit-specific files.
- Split scanned packets into page-by-page PDFs for naming, filing, or later merging.
Privacy & Security
Your PDF stays in your browser. Splitting happens locally with JavaScript and pdf-lib.
No file data is uploaded to PDF2atom servers, and we do not store, inspect, or analyze your document.
This is especially useful for tax packets, ID scans, contracts, school records, medical paperwork, and bank statements. Server-based PDF splitters require you to trust an upload-and-delete promise. PDF2atom avoids that step completely.
Tips for clean output
- Check the detected page count before entering ranges, especially for scanned files that contain blank pages.
- Use extract mode when you want one final PDF made from selected pages.
- Use split every page when each page needs a separate filename or separate review workflow.
- Need a custom order? Extract the pages you need, then use Merge PDF to combine files in a new order.

Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded when I split a PDF?
No. The PDF is loaded and split inside your browser. The output PDF or ZIP is generated locally, and your file never reaches our servers.
Can I split every page into a separate PDF?
Yes. Choose "Split every page" and the tool will create one PDF per page, then package them in a ZIP file for download.
How do page ranges work?
Use commas for separate pages and hyphens for ranges. For example, 1-3, 5 extracts pages 1, 2, 3, and 5. Open ranges such as 8- continue through the last page.
Can I extract pages into one PDF?
Yes. The default mode extracts your selected page range into a single new PDF, preserving the original page size and content.
Does this remove pages from the original file?
No. Your original PDF is never modified. The tool creates a new output file based on the pages you choose.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
Some view-restricted PDFs may load, but fully password-locked files need to be unlocked first using the password you know. We do not bypass or crack PDF passwords.
